Getting in and out
There’s nothing better than finding the perfect spot to set up camp but it’s important to make sure you access the spot in a responsible way.
When you’re accessing your fishing or camping spot, it’s important to remain respectful of others and express caution when accessing the area. Under no circumstance are you allowed to cross private land to get to Crown land, except with the private landowner’s permission.
Tips to responsibly getting in and out
- If you need to pass through private land to access the river, always ask for permission.
- Farm tracks can often look like a public gravel road, so you should check on the Vic Fishing app to see if the track is public or private before entering.
- Make sure you leave all gates as you found them and if areas are unfenced, don’t cross onto private land.
- When driving in, stick to the marked tracks and don’t create new ones by off-road driving, as this is destructive and illegal. Deflate tyres and drive sensibly to preserve the tracks.
Accessing licensed Crown water frontages
Under no circumstance are you allowed to cross private land to get to Crown water frontage, except with the private landowner’s permission.
The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning have supplied a summary of general rules for camping on designated Crown water frontage campsites which can be viewed in the table below.
CAMPING
- Camping permitted only in designated areas
- No camping within 20 metres of the waterway
- No camping within 200 metres of any nearby residence
- Maximum stay 14 nights
GENERAL BEHAVIOUR
- No dogs allowed
- Do not enter or cross private land without permission
- Leave any gate as found
- Do not interfere with or disturb livestock.
Regulations for general behaviour
A person must not move, displace or interfere with any building, gate, fence, barrier, sign or other structure or works on regulated land.
A person must immediately close a gate on regulated land that the person has opened.
